A LEGACY AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY

Inspired by a friend who had chartered the Nu chapter of alpha Kappa Delta Phi at Pennsylvania State University, Kuangmei Lin (or as her friends call her, Gwen) gathered a group of her seven closest friends at Boston University in the Spring of 1995 in the hopes of doing the same at her school. In the back court of the George Sherman Union at BU Central, these eight women met for the first time as the Boston University Interest Group. Their hope was to create the first Greek organization at Boston University to be founded on the basis of cultural awareness, and to unite like-minded Asian-American women in the bond of eternal sisterhood. From the very start, it was an uphill battle - carrying a cultural connotation was unheard of back then, but in addition, they soon found out that they would be starting the first new Greek organization at BU in over eighty years. In the Fall of 1995, Gwen and her friends received news that their Interest Group had been approved, and they would begin the process of chartering that following semester. On April 12th, 1996, these eight women officially became the Charter Class of Boston University alpha Kappa Delta Phi.

"I thought, 'These are my friends and I love them like sisters, so why not cement this amazing sisterhood we already have with each other, in the ideals we all share?'"

  - Kimberly"Valley Girl" Yan (Charter, Spr '96)

"We wanted to be the first organized student group on campus that integrated Asian women from various walks of life, and to one day become the bridge between cultural groups that traditionally saw each other as rivals."

 - Naomi "Casper" Muraoka (Charter, Spr '96)

FROM ONE WHITE DRESS TO ANOTHER

For over 20 years now, Boston University alpha Kappa Delta Phi has been building strong women through upholding the pillars of sisterhood, scholarship, leadership, service, and Asian-Awarness. From the moment each of us accepted our membership in aKDPhi wearing our sorority whites, to when we saw our Little Sisters go through the same process, to when we graduated and landed our first jobs, and to the moment we stood side by side with one another as bridesmaids -- our sisterhood isn't something that goes away after you graduate from BU and leave Boston. In every essence of the word, being an aKDPhi is everlasting, and our alumnae are living proof of this fact.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

Our chapter’s 87 alumnae reside in the following 32 cities, with 27%
